Classes for Adults (and Teens with Instructor Approval)
Intermediate/Advanced Acrylic Painting
Students will have the opportunity to explore acrylics through a variety of painting exercises which address color, composition, value and style. One-on-one guidance makes this an appropriate class for a wide range of students, from those who want to paint realistically to those who want to paint abstractly.

An Introduction to the Sacred Art of Icon Painting
Icons are pictorial expressions of spiritual subjects. This class is an introduction to the study of Icon Painting.
The class will be taught using tempera paints.

Basic Drawing for Adults
This is an introduction to drawing. Learn to draw in a relaxing and pressure-free environment using a variety of techniques and exercises. All skill levels welcome.

Intermediate Drawing Class for Teens and Adults
Drawing is the foundation skill for all artists. It teaches observation, allows exploration of artistic principles such as composition, proportion and elements such as line, value and shape. Come learn about various drawing media and technique using class still life and other student driven subjects. We will cover thumbnail sketches, internal measurements, perspective, light and shadow.

Practical Acting for Adults and Teens
Do you enjoy the opportunity to speak in front of a group? Or do you get nervous at those Monday morning presentation meetings? Skills learned in this 4-week class can be used throughout society. With simple exercises and practice, you will explore how you can use acting skills for your life (whatever your occupation!). Then, when you find yourself in front of a crowd, you may actually enjoy it, and therefore make it enjoyable for everyone!

Mixed Media Exploration for Adults
Unearth your creativity while you explore painting, collage, printmaking, clay and more in this back-to-basics, beginner friendly class.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing for Adults
Move beyond the basics and refresh existing skills – students will be learning more advanced functional and decorative projects such as dinnerware, lidded jars and casseroles, goblets, two-piece vases, lamps, etc.

Beginning/Intermediate Watercolor for Teens and Adults
Learn how to use watercolor as an immediate record of the inspiration. Beginning students may chose to simply learn to draw what they see. Intermediate and more advanced students may choose to push their parameters in watercolor with the help of the instructor’s expert eye.

Ready, Start, Art! For Young Homeschoolers
Fun projects enliven fundamental lessons in line, composition, form, gesture and color. Students get to use a variety of materials on traditional subjects like still-life and landscape, and fantasy assignments that develop their creative expression. Ages: 5-7

Song Writing and Analysis
Is songwriting poetry? Is writing poetry the same as writing songs? So much goes into a good song. This class will analyze elements of good lyrics through “literal” vs. “figurative” language. Using thesaurus, Rhyming resources and etymology, we will delve into the burning questions; “must we rhyme? Do we tell a story? Who do we write for? Why do we write about the things we write about?” Throughout the six weeks, we will write songs including lyrics, cords and melodies. You do not need to be able to play an instrument to be part of this class.

Knitting for Teens
Gather round for this fun, creative after-school knitting circle. For young knitters, beginner to advanced, all skill levels are welcome. Limit six students.

Anatomy and the Portrait
Drawing is the base of all realist art and in this 6-week course you will learn classical technique for drawing the portrait in a realistic way. Working from a live clothed model, you will learn how to start your drawing, see and record shapes clearly and simply, and draw form by carefully observing the properties of light.
Dates: Part 1 - February 24, March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
Part 2 - April 7, 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12 Time: Tuesdays, 6-9pm

Tapestry Weaving
Students will learn to set up the tapestry loom, and receive an introduction to several tapestry weaving techniques. Each student will create a simple piece of plain weave fabric, then move on to making simple geometric shapes as they learn the basic tapestry techniques. Students who have taken the class before will work on perfecting technique and mastering tension, warp coverage, and proper interlocking technique. Students will leave the class with a simple plain woven piece of cloth, and a simple tapestry. More importantly, they will have the skills to begin a journey of exploration into the craft of tapestry weaving. Four weeks

Spinning Yarn on the Spinning Wheel
Find out why so many people choose to spin their own yarn. Learn to spin wool into yarn and learn to ply as the Navajo did. Spinning the wheel to create yarn seems to match body rhythms and sooth stressed souls. This class will focus on the very beginnings of spinning on the spinning wheel. Students will leave the class with several skeins of yarn, of various plies and weights. Four weeks

Friday Afternoon Fiber Funshop!
Students will explore the path traveled by a fleece, from the sheep, through cleaning, carding and spinning and will finally weave a simple piece of cloth using it. Each student will wash locks of wool, and then learn to spin the wool during the first week of class. Subsequently, students will use commercially spun wool to set up a simple frame loom, and will weave a finished piece of cloth using a combination of commercial yarn, and yarn from their own hands. Each student will have his/her own frame loom to come and go to class with, so they can continue the fun at home throughout the week, and at the end of the class. Four weeks

Beading with Barbara
Something new to do with your friends! Come be a part of Beading with Barbara! Learn a new technique, make a great piece of ewelry, get creative, enjoy a few laughs and relax with friends. You can bring your own favorite beads and supplies, or use those provided.

Flower Power! Watercolor
The instructor, Catherine Hillis, will present a two day workshop on painting flowers in watercolor. Each day begins with demonstrations of how to paint several types of flowers and how to mix realistic greens in leaves, as well as how to paint glass and its reflective qualities. She presents clear, step by step instructions on how to design and paint a realistic floral bouquet in a glass vase. Both afternoons will include a positive and helpful critique that will guide students on how to complete their paintings. Kid’s Clay Class
This class is for children and teens wanting to learn to use the potter’s wheel and hand build or continue on with their skills. Basic methods of centering, throwing, construction and glazing will be covered to create cylinder, cup and bowl forms, as well as other creations.

Daytime Drama for Children
As young children, we naturally imitate others. This 4-week class helps kids to get back in touch with that instinct, through fun exercises and experimentation!

Lectures
Masterworks of Classical Art from Western Civilization
Classical sculptor, Thomas Marsh will present a slide lecture on masterworks of sculpture and painting. This survey will cover many of Marsh’s personal favorites -- from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome -- through the late Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical periods -- and into the 20th century. Come to the warm Arts Center In Orange and enjoy beautiful pictures of great works of art on a cold winter evening!

Clubs
Photography Club!
The Photography Club in Orange has taken off. Meeting once a month, the club members share images, experience, ideas and their love of the camera. The club meets on the third Monday every month from 7-9pm (no meeting in December). For more information about the club, phone the AC at 672-7311.
Fiber Circle
Open to everyone interested in fiber. Come, sit and spin, weave or knit. Create while you relax and visit with other fiber artists. This is a free, open session each week for those who want good conversation while working on their own creations. Bring your own wheels, looms and other supplies. This is not an instructed class, rather a venue for fiber enthusiasts already spinning, weaving and knitting. Bring your favorite tea -- we’ll put the kettle on. Meeting Monday’s beginning January 5, 2009 from 3:30 – 5 pm. For more information about the fiber circle, phone the AC at 672-7311.

class meeting. Cancellations due to weather will follow the Orange County
School closing schedule, unless otherwise notified. Students may also call

Instructor Bios
Cindy Beblavy received her fine arts degrees from the Corcoran Gallery
of Art and the Columbus School of Art and Design.
Anna Marie DeMio Dowen studied at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago,
as well as Western Illinois University and Arizona State University. Her
artwork includes painting, drawing, and multimedia explorations. She directs
the Arts Center’s Community Outreach Program and teaches adult classes
for the program.
Kitty Dodd is an award winning artist specializing in animals. She works
exclusively in colored pencils and oils. She has exhibited in several national
shows, received awards and has art in homes around the world. Kitty has
taught many classes including the starting of an art department in a private
school to teaching adults at the National Zoo in D.C.
Barbara Hawley received her BA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland.
She developed the first artist-in-residence program at the UVA Cancer Center
where she focused on creative self-expression and the healing power of
art. She has also introduced art programs and classes to Grymes Memorial
School, the Renaissance School, Neuro Care and Play Partners a division
of Child, Youth, and Family Services.
Aimee Hunt received her BA from the College of the Atlantic where she concentrated
on Fabric and Ceramics. For 8 years Aimee was a student at the Bemis Art
School for Children. She has also studied at the Worcester Craft Center
and the Corcoran School of Art.
Ed King teaches for Germanna Community College and is interested in ancient
history, archaeology and images from nature in his art. He got his MFA
degree from Pratt Institute in NYC, and also studied at VCU in Richmond.
Thomas Marsh is a classical figurative sculptor who has created many public
monuments in California, as well as public sculptures in Florida and at
Freedom Park in Arlington, VA. He received a BFA in painting from the Layton
School of Art, Milwaukee, WE, an MFA in sculpture from California State
University, Long Beach, and has studied extensively in Italy.
Monica Newell of Monster Art studio in Sperryville Virginia is an acrylic
painter/mixed media artist with 16 years experience creating and showing
art around the country.
Martha Strawther is the Director of Montpelier Hunt Races and enjoys painting
as a hobby.
Audrie Trammell is a local artist and teacher who resides in Louisa with
her family. She has a BFA in Art Education and BLS in Studio Art. Her media
are sculpture, ceramics and painting. She shows her work in venues around
the region and works out of her private studio. She has taught painting,
ceramics and printmaking in Orange and Richmond since 2002.
Wendy Wiebe has taught felting privately and in schools for 6 years. She
has received awards for her work from the Southeastern Animal Fiber Festival
and the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival and was invited to show her work
at the prestigious International Fiber Festival in London. She raises Karakul
and Navajo-Churro sheep at Finefelt Farm in Orange.
